The Common Cold – Does it stop you in your tracks or do you plough through it?

The Common Cold – Does it stop you in your tracks or do you plough through it?

It’s a well-known fact that there is no cure for the common cold. Try as we might, once the bug has hit you, you pretty much have to ride through it!

This cold/flu bug that’s doing the rounds has hit everyone in my household and I’ve managed to avoid it, until now. I woke up yesterday and I felt absolutely awful! I have a runny nose, painful sinuses and a wheezy chest that is making me sound like a 40 a day smoker!

I try not to go to the doctors too often as I don’t like taking Antibiotics unless its absolutely vital and I don’t think it is right now. I’ve been dosing up on Green Smoothies, vitamins and last night I had to hit the Sudafed and Vicks so I could breathe well enough to go to sleep!

I’m Self Employed and if I don’t work, I don’t earn and so I try to plough on through any kind of illness that I encounter. I’m lucky that I don’t get ill very often but I have two small children and it’s inevitable that I will get struck down at some point, which brings me to my current situation!

I was in the midst of making some spicy Chicken Soup and I thought, ‘I’m going to ask my fellow Fit Pros/Peers what they do when they are ill?

So I put a request out on Facebook and I got some really great responses!

If it is in my chest or above I rest, below that I exercise but lighten it up. As for remedies sleep, always sleep.

Paula Denvir

Same advice as Layla & to keep hydrated with herbal teas. My go to cold remedy is hot lemon, honey, garlic & ginger.

Take paracetamol when needed… why struggle?? Keeps me going… also Vicks vapour rub on the soles of your feet at night helps to ease coughs and helps you sleep!

Prevention is the way forward! Comfort & soothing whilst you are feeling rubbish!! Get the juicer out, juice ginger & lemon, then pop into ice cube trays & freeze! Every morning just chuck a frozen cube into your favourite mug & top up with hot water!! More often if you are suffering from a cold!!

A blend of garlic, turmeric paste, black pepper, ginger, apple cider vinegar, lemon, raw honey, slice of pineapple including the core, green leaf and coconut water.

Sounds nasty, but everything is anti inflammatory and immune boosting. Actually quite nice!

One thing we love to do is a steam clean as we say! Add a few olbas oil or eucalyptus drops to a bowl of steaming water. Drape a towel round the head. Then deep breathe to steam clear your nasal passage. Great for a good clear out, especially if you get a bunged nose & headaches over your eyes etc.

So, the general rule of thumb is to rest, boost your immune system with natural ingredients and where possible, prevention is better than trying to find a cure!

Thank you to everyone who commented, I appreciate you taking time out from your day to help me put this together!
